The Joy Up 30 Second Joy Reset™

“Joy Up™ is simple enough to use anywhere and intentional enough to matter.” Five steps. Thirty seconds. No equipment, no preparation, no belief required.

Joy as regulation, not jokes

The reset does not ask you to be funny. It asks you to steady yourself.

Under pressure, people may become reactive, withdrawn, defensive, or emotionally numb. The reset uses breath, gentle movement, and intentional laughter. Even when laughter feels artificial at first, people commonly notice their breath getting deeper and their shoulders dropping.

This is not about humor. It is about presence.

When steadiness improves:

  • attention steadies
  • emotional intensity decreases
  • boundaries feel more accessible
  • decisions reflect values rather than urgency
  • energy becomes more sustainable

Joy Up™ is a doorway, not a demand for happiness.

The five steps

“There is no perfect way to do it. Participation matters more than precision.”

Step 1

Ground

Place one hand on your chest and one on your belly. Physical contact helps many people feel more present.

If that feels uncomfortable in public, adapt: rest your hands on your thighs · press your feet gently into the floor · notice where your body is supported · hold something steady (a pen, a cup, a chair) · take one slow look around the room.

Grounding is about contact, not posture.

Step 2

Breathe

Inhale slowly through your nose. No forcing. No counting. Let the breath arrive as it is.

A single intentional inhale is enough.

Step 3

Smile

Allow a gentle, internal smile. This is not a social performance. It is a signal, small and subtle, to yourself that you are not under threat right now.

If smiling feels inaccessible, soften your jaw or relax your tongue.

Step 4

Laugh

Begin with a soft, intentional laugh. It may feel awkward or quiet. That is fine. Laughter is a physical act. It uses your breath and your whole torso, and people often notice their body loosening before their thinking does.

Silent or internal laughter is also valid.

Step 5

Release

Exhale fully. Drop your shoulders. Let the body settle.

Notice what is different, even slightly.

The whole thing

Thirty seconds

“The entire Joy Up™ practice can take as little as 30 seconds.”

With practice, these steps become less something you do and more something you return to.

When to use it

Use the reset when you notice:

  • your breath shortening
  • your shoulders lifting
  • your tone tightening
  • your thoughts racing
  • your body bracing

These are signals, not failures.

Especially supportive

  • before interactions with history or power dynamics
  • before difficult conversations, meetings, or feedback
  • after moments of tension or harm
  • between emotionally demanding interactions
  • before decisions made under pressure

Use Joy Up™ as preparation, not just recovery.

What to notice after

After practicing, you may notice:

  • clearer thinking
  • a deeper breath
  • softer shoulders
  • a shift in emotional tone
  • more access to restraint

All responses are valid.

There is no correct frequency to practice Joy Up™. This practice is not a checklist. It is an invitation.
